I found most characters likable and relatable. Alasdair, per the norm, was strong, smart and kind with a possessive streak the size of entire Highlands. Gwyneth veered from shy and quiet to suddenly fierce and risking her life unnecessary. There was plenty suspense, steam and obvious villains, and I found myself sufficiently entertained. A girl can never say no to braw men in kilts saving the day. With the arrival of a powerful man from her past, a horrible decision confronts her-give up her son or the man she loves. As the danger and conflict surrounding them escalate, Alasdair and Gwyneth discover an explosive passion neither of them expected. But by taking in and protecting Lady Gwyneth and her son, he provokes more attacks from his mortal enemy. Laird Alasdair MacGrath is driven to end two-hundred years of feuding with the MacIrwins. Dare she trust the enemy more than her own family? When her clan learns of her betrayal, they seek vengeance. She only knows she is inexplicably drawn to him and he wants peace as she does. She risks everything to rescue the fierce MacGrath warrior from the battlefield where he’s left for dead by her clan. Gwyneth Carswell, an English lady banished by her father to the harsh Scottish Highlands, wants nothing more than to take her young son away from the violence of two fighting clans-her own distant kin, the MacIrwins, and their enemies, the MacGraths.

Brief Summary of Book: The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt Inversions can be read as a standalone novel, but I wouldn't recommend it – you would simply miss too much of the underlying story. There's no contact between the two – calling the link between them weak would be wrong, it's more a subtle kind of thing, with no real consequences for the surface story. They both live in the same medieval type world, but serve different masters, in different empires, in different capacities (I guess that their titles kind of gave that one away). Inversions is about these two characters called "The Doctor" and "The Bodyguard", each of their stories are told in alternating chapters. Banks does some of his best writing on par with Crow Road and Use of Weapons. If I had to sum up Inversions with two words it would probably be "Damn good". There are some small references to The Culture, but calling it a culture novel is probably stretching it a bit. I'm not saying that it isn't just that you have to look closely. You have to look really closely to find anything that by any stretch of definition can be called Science Fiction. Banks which usually means that it's a Science Fiction story. If I had to sum up Inversions with one word it would probably be "Different". Inversions is a Culture series novel by the noted British author Iain M Banks.
